چکیده
Abstract Populism has lately become a matter of concern in both popular and academic circles. Yet contemporary writers have had difficulty parsing populism's relationship to democracy, partly because they are universally committed the latter. It is worth turning thinker like Aristotle, who—despite not explicitly addressing populism itself—is able reflect clearly on various democratic phenomena that we tend consider populist, he does share our normative or analytical assumptions about democracy. Aristotelian Syntax from a Computational-Combinatorial Point of View
This paper translates Aristotle’s syllogistic logic of the Analytica priora into the sphere of computational-combinatorical research methods. The task is accomplished by formalising Aristotle’s logical system in terms of rule-based reduction relations on a suitable basic set, which allow us to apply standard concepts of the theory of such structures (Newman lemma) to the ancient logical system....
متن کاملAn Aristotelian notion of size
The näıve idea of “size” for collections seems to obey both to Aristotle’s Principle: “the whole is greater than its parts” and to Cantor’s Principle: “1-to-1 correspondences preserve size”. Notoriously, Aristotle’s and Cantor’s principles are incompatible for infinite collections. Cantor’s theory of cardinalities weakens the former principle to “the part is not greater than the whole”, but the...
متن کاملAn Evolutionary View of Family Conflict and Cooperation
What can we expect our evolutionary history to tell us about human reproductive and family life? Each of us is a descendant of an unbroken line of males and females who survived to adulthood and somehow managed to mate and produce at least one offspring who also survived to adulthood, mated, and so on. For most economists, the hypothesis that human preferences are designed to maximize reproduct...
متن کاملInefficient lobbying, populism and oligarchy
This paper analyses the efficiency consequences of lobbying in a production economy with imperfect commitment. We first show that the Pareto efficiency result found for truthful equilibria of common agency games in static exchange economies no longer holds under these more general conditions. We construct a model of pressure groups where the set of efficient truthful common-agency equilibria ha...
متن کاملReorienting when cues conflict: evidence for an adaptive-combination view.
Proponents of a geometric module claim that human adults accomplish spatial reorientation in a fundamentally different way than young children and nonhuman animals do. However, reporting two experiments that used a conflict paradigm, this article shows striking similarities between human adults and young children, as well as nonhuman animals. Specifically, Experiment 1 demonstrates that adults ...
